Are the 49ers a good bet to get back to Super Bowl?
By John Buhler
The San Francisco 49ers came so close to winning Super Bowl 54 on Sunday. Are the 49ers a good bet to get back to the Super Bowl in 2020?
The San Francisco 49ers were one quarter away from winning their sixth Super Bowl in franchise history and the first since the 1994 NFL season. Unfortunately, the 49ers ran into Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs offense coming alive at just the right time. Both teams are excellent, but are the 49ers are a good bet to get back to Super Bowl 55 down in Tampa next year?
On this week’s episode of Stacking the Box, FanSided‘s Matt Verderame and Mark Carman, along with former NFL offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz, look at where the 49ers stack up in what should be a deep NFC next season. Will the be Super Bowl-caliber once again or will they be on the outside looking in at the big game next February (26:00)?
Neither Schwartz or Verderame think the 49ers get back to the Super Bowl next year, mostly because the NFC is so deep and so difficult to come out of. The last team to make it to the Super Bowl in consecutive years out of the NFC was the 2013-14 Seattle Seahawks. Before that, it was the 1996-97 Green Bay Packers and the 1992-93 Dallas Cowboys. It’s just so hard in the NFC.
If it’s not the 49ers, then Schwartz likes the Dallas Cowboys to come out of the NFC. He’s also high on the Philadelphia Eagles. Verderame really likes the Eagles next year too, but he’s also in on the New Orleans Saints. Other teams that are in the mix to represent the NFC next year in their eyes are the Los Angeles Rams, the Seattle Seahawks, the Minnesota Vikings and the Atlanta Falcons.
San Francisco’s schedule becomes tougher, as the 49ers now have to play a first-place schedule instead of a third-place schedule. We know how tough the NFC West is from top to bottom. It’s not like the Arizona Cardinals are cannon fodder anymore with Kyler Murray as their franchise quarterback. If San Francisco does get back to the Super Bowl, they will have certainly earned it.
Ultimately, getting to a Super Bowl and not winning it has not been great for any team not named the New England Patriots. After losing Super Bowl 52 to the Eagles, New England rebounded to win Super Bowl 53 over the Rams. It has happened before. The only difference is New England has dominated the AFC for two decades, while nobody has owned the NFC since the early 1990s.
Here are a few other topics discussed on this week’s episode of Stacking the Box:
- Chiefs win or Niners lose? (19:49)
- Schwartz breaks down 3rd and 15 (23:29)
- Which playoff teams will miss in 2020? (28:16)
- Which teams make the playoffs that missed in 2019? (29:52)
All this and more!
