The San Francisco 49ers will be playing in Super Bowl LIV, which means they have one of the most talented rosters in the NFL. But are there places where the roster could be even better based on past drafts? Niner Noise investigates.

There’s little doubt that San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch has done a great job, along with head coach Kyle Shanahan, of constructing the team’s current roster.

Lynch has been rewarded the Pro Football Writers of America’s Executive of the Year award for 2019, indicating how good of a job he’s done not only this season, but so far in his tenure as GM.

This doesn’t mean that Lynch and Shanahan have been perfect in their roster moves through three seasons, however—especially as it pertains to the draft. Mistakes have been made, and swings have turned into misses.

With that in mind—and given the success of the 49ers this season—it felt like a fun thought experiment to look at the players that Lynch and Shanahan have drafted during their time running the Niners and look to see places where they could be even better across the roster.

We’ll start with the regime’s first draft in 2017, which started with the 49ers having the 2nd overall pick in that draft.
