The 49ers potentially have a size-mismatch weapon waiting in the folds in wide receiver Jalen Hurd, whose preseason injury led to the team redshirting him his rookie season.

Hurd is another wild card, yes. But one can imagine the thought of giving Kyle Shanahan another big-bodied target to create additional mismatches in the red zone. While Shanahan hasn’t always prized size to his wide receiving corps, his red-zone offenses haven’t exactly been the most potent, either.

At 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, South Carolina’s Bryan Edwards checks off a lot of those boxes.

Edwards assumed the Gamecocks’ No. 1 wide receiver role in the wake of Deebo Samuel making his way to San Francisco in 2019, and one has to think Samuel would love the prospects of getting his former teammate in a Niners uniform.

Aside from that, though, Edwards also has excellent route-running skills, which should put him on Shanahan’s radar. Additionally, Edwards’ size hasn’t hindered him from being plenty fast on the field, also using his abilities to create yards after the catch — another facet of Shanahan’s offense.

The production is there, too, as Edwards led South Carolina with 816 receiving yards and six touchdowns this season.
