49ers big board for 2020 NFL Draft: Bowl games edition
Pros:
- One of the most physically gifted players in the entire draft class
- Prototypical size for a blindside blocker
- Can play either tackle position
- Basketball background has made him very quick and athletic
- Enough strength to play at left tackle
Cons:
- Very raw prospect, teams will need to coach him to be a viable professional player
- Isn’t technically refined, relies too much in using strength over technique
- Didn’t play football until high school, so has poor instincts
- Poor footwork makes him susceptible to defenders using overwhelming pace or power
If you want to draft a prospect who’ll play in Week 1, you need to look elsewhere. But for those with patience, Prince Tega Wanogho is a very intriguing prospect.
Wanogho has all the talents needed to be an effective tackle. He has good size, athleticism born out of his basketball background and he has the strength needed for the position.
For Wanogho, however, he is extremely raw given he never played football before high school. This can be seen in his film at Auburn, where he had some ugly plays being beaten due to poor technique.
For the 49ers, Joe Staley is nearing the end of his career. Injuries and age have caused him to regress this season, while he’s still functional it’s clear the end is coming soon.
But while Staley has only a few years left, he still can be invaluable as a teacher. The 49ers have Justin Skule and Daniel Brunskill on the roster as potential successors, but the position is so important, the 49ers should consider adding more bodies.
Wanogho is raw, but the Niners still would have at least a year to build up his technique to go with his physical gifts.
Draft range: Second round
Wanogho is much too raw to be considered in the first round, but his potential ceiling with his physical gifts are so tempting that he looks an intriguing pick in the second round of the draft.
