The annual FanSided 250 ranking of the hottest fandoms is out, and we San Francisco 49ers fans slot in at 145th across all fandoms, 5th in NFL fandoms. Here’s some tips on how we can move that ranking up next year.

FanSided has released the FanSided 250, their ranking off the hottest fandoms across a plethora of platforms. San Francisco 49ers fans have come in at 145th overall, and 15th in NFL teams.

I won’t go in to why we are criminally underrated, as one of my colleagues has already done that here.

Although it is ridiculous that we are behind Portland Trailblazers fans. When the best thing that has happened to your fandom in years is Carmelo Anthony coming to your team, nothing good has happened to your fandom. Not to mention that the only reason they will have any relevance this year is because the Golden State Warriors’ Steph Curry and Klay Thompson are injured. But I digress.

As a wise warthog once said, “You gotta put your behind in the past.” With that in mind, let’s look to the future, and how the 49ers fandom can increase their rankings every year. There’s a few key steps we can take to do that.

The first step: Do nothing. You heard me, nothing. That’s because even if nothing changes, the 49ers should easily climb the rankings as many of the fandoms ahead of us drop down.

And trust me, many of the fandoms ahead of us will drop down.

There are a couple of reasons for this. The first is that many of the fandoms ranked above us are really just flashes in the pan. No one will care about things like FIFA 2020, Succession, or the Seattle Seahawks in a year. These, and many other flashes in the pan will no longer have relevant fandoms by the next FanSided 250, so the Niners should easily climb a few spots from them dropping.

There are also many fandoms ranked ahead of us which will drop because of inevitable events to come, resulting in them dropping in the rankings. Like the Oakland Raiders, who are going to lose lots of fans when they move to Las Vegas this summer. Or wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., whose fans are not going to support him as much after he forces his way off the Cleveland Browns this summer. Both quarterback Tom Brady and the New England Patriots are bound to drop in the rankings once Brady retires or reveals that he’s been drinking the blood of other, younger quarterbacks to stay youthful.

That’s why Jimmy Garoppolo left, stay woke.

So, for those reasons, the 49ers fandom should rise in the rankings, even without us doing anything. But don’t worry, there are concrete steps we can take to move up the rankings too.

This step is simple. Keep supporting our team as they make their postseason run. The Niners are a Super Bowl contender, and that alone should move them up the rankings next year, especially if they can make a deep postseason run. Additionally, a large part of the FanSided 250 is based on how much “buzz” there is around a fandom, so the more we talk about and hype our team on Twitter and other sites, the more we can help them climb up the rankings.

Finally, the last and most important way we can help our team is: Keep tweeting at Doug Gottlieb every time George Kittle makes a great block. For those of you who are unaware, Gottlieb recently had the worst take of all time when he said Kittle was “not much of a blocker.” Considering Kittle is widely regarded as one of, if not the, best blocking tight ends in the NFL, the take is wildly ridiculous. Naturally, 49ers fans have been tweeting at him like crazy every time Kittle makes a block.

While I don’t actually know if this will help our rankings, it can’t hurt and it’s hilarious, so keep it up!

So, in conclusion, in order to move the 49ers fandom up on the FanSided 250 next year, the biggest thing we can do is support and hype up our team as they attempt to make a Super Bowl run. And of course, nothing. Whatever you do, don’t forget to do nothing.
