The linebackers, however, are lacking a true athletic backup for the injured Kwon Alexander. While on the whole, the Niners’ backup linebackers are performing well, the defense has still been susceptible to mobile quarterbacks all season.
This is where the Baltimore Ravens won, their run-option offense was causing headaches all day for San Francisco.
The 49ers have to face mobile quarterbacks, Russell Wilson and Kyler Murray, four times a season, or a quarter of all games. Next year they have to face talented mobile quarterback Josh Allen when they play the Buffalo Bills as well.
They don’t necessarily have to find help in the first round, but the 49ers need to add a talented athlete to their linebacker ranks to help deal with these mobile threats.
The Niners defense has few weaknesses, but susceptibility to these mobile threats is one they have which must be plugged in a division where half the teams employ this style of quarterback.
