No. 5: A new potential successor to Joe Staley has emerged

The injuries suffered by Joe Staley has unfortunately reminded the fans that soon the 49ers must prepare for life after the team’s longest-tenured player.

With thin stocks at tackle, it was thought maybe the NFL Draft would be the best place to find he new successor. However. two candidate from the roster had put their hats in the ring.

Initially, sixth-round rookie Justin Skule looked like he could be a raw option who could be molded into a starter in the future. Skule initially blocked well pressed quickly into action, but he had regressed in recent weeks.

After continuing to struggle against the Packers, head coach Kyle Shanahan made the decision to swap Skule for backup right tackle Daniel Brunskill, to better results.

While not perfect, Brunskill was an immediate upgrade who continued his strong body of work starting at right tackle. He has been impressive this year and at worst has cemented a role as the swing tackle.

If he continues to perform well, he should be considered as a cheap successor for Staley on the blindside. Having gotten him for nothing, that’s a big bonus compared to what some teams go through to find their franchise blindside blocker.
