No. 3: Cornerback Jalen Ramsey, Jacksonville Jaguars

John Lynch told the San Jose Mercury News‘ Cam Inman the 49ers would be aggressive on the trade market leading up to the October deadline.

Just how much of that is the proverbial “smoke and mirrors” campaign is anyone’s guess. But one of the names surely mentioned within Niners circles is Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey.

Ramsey’s frustration with Jacksonville is well documented enough, and he requested a trade earlier this season. The compensation for the two-time Pro Bowler would be awfully steep, and San Francisco used its 2020 second-round NFL Draft pick to acquire EDGE Dee Ford from the Kansas City Chiefs already.

Further complicating the matter is Ramsey’s contract, which still includes the fifth-year option. But he wants an extension at what will likely be close to a record-setting deal for a cornerback.

For a 49ers squad still needing to extend two Pro Bowlers, defensive tackle DeForest Buckner and tight end George Kittle, that could make San Francisco’s cap situation considerably difficult, too.

But the need is there. Veteran cornerback Richard Sherman is signed through 2020, while No. 2 corner Ahkello Witherspoon is on the mend with an ankle sprain. Witherspoon’s backup, Jason Verrett, didn’t look good in his brief action in Week 3.

So, by adding a player like Ramsey, the Niners could solve the short-term worries with Witherspoon, while grabbing a long-term replacement for Sherman.

Certainly worthwhile, even if it would come at a lofty cost.
