Chargers vs. 49ers preseason preview: Much at stake for fringe players

49ers Preseason Injury Updates
For those not in the know, NFL teams aren’t required to provide detailed injury updates during the preseason. Those lists aren’t required until Week 1, so determining who is healthy, who’s not and what the likelihood of any injured player playing can be a bit hazy.
Fortunately, NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco was able to summarize Kyle Shanahan’s synopsis on injury updates, which unfortunately includes a bit of bad news.
Second-year defensive tackle Kentavius Street, who missed his rookie 2018 campaign with an ACL tear, is likely heading to injured reserve again, as he needs arthroscopic knee surgery.
“He’s battled through his knee all year,” Shanahan said. “He’s had some knee tendinitis throughout camp – a little similar to [EDGE] Dee Ford. He’s been trying to battle through it and get a spot here. We decided (Monday) that he can’t do it any more.”
Rookie wide receiver Jalen Hurd is dealing with a back injury, and his status for Week 1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers remains in question. It’s also unlikely slot wide receiver Trent Taylor (foot) will be available to start the regular season.
San Francisco also placed rookie cornerback Tim Harris (groin) on IR, ending his season, but redshirting him for 2019.
Center Weston Richburg (knee) and running back Jerick McKinnon (knee) were able to practice this week, yet Shanahan told Maiocco neither player will suit up against the Chargers. Both could be available for Week 1, however.
