49ers Position Battles and Storylines to Watch vs. Chargers

If one views Week 4 of the NFL preseason as a last-chance effort by fringe players to make the cut, the game can actually end up being an exciting one.

Two years ago, then-rookie wide receiver and kick returner Victor Bolden managed an impressive return during an exhibition finale, which earned him a spot on the 53-man roster to start the year.

A handful of similar performances could produce similar outcomes in 2019.

Risers Among Offensive Line Depth

San Francisco has its starting crop of offensive linemen set for the regular season. But depth is still in question. Rookie swing tackle Justin Skule has had some issues this preseason, and recently acquired Sam Young could overtake his spot on the depth chart.

Backup interior linemen Joshua Garnett, Ben Garland, Najee Toran and Ross Reynolds are also players to watch here.

Back End of the 49ers Defensive Line

With Kentavius Street destined to be shelved for 2019, the door is open for Damontre Moore to crack the 53-man roster. He has a bit more of an edge presence, although that could endanger someone like Ronald Blair‘s hold on a roster spot.

San Francisco’s defensive line hasn’t been at full strength this preseason, making this bout one to watch as the unit finally comes together.

Dante Pettis and the 49ers Wide Receiver Depth Chart

Second-year wide receiver Dante Pettis played into the fourth quarter against Kansas City, which is rare for players all but assured a roster spot. Kyle Shanahan later said he wanted Pettis to get the extra reps to help define his role on the offense, and it wouldn’t be shocking to see the wide receiver suit up again versus the Chargers.

Depending on how many receivers Shanahan keeps, one could see some crucial battles between depth receivers Kendrick Bourne, Jordan Matthews and Richie James.

James’ stout performance this preseason sure makes him look like a lock, but Bourne and Matthews seem to be battling for just one remaining spot.

C.J. Beathard’s Final Chance?

While Shanahan has also alluded to the idea the 49ers will keep three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster this season, it’s just so hard to assume this will be the case.

Nearly all the evidence points to Nick Mullens beating C.J. Beathard to back up Jimmy Garoppolo in 2019. And unless some crazy trade comes through the wire, pulling Beathard or Mullens away in exchange, it’s likely one of the two names will be on the chopping block on Aug. 31.

Beathard is still in the fight, of course, but he’ll have to prove he’s more than worthy staying around on San Francisco’s roster on Thursday.
