Stock down: Joe Staley

For what seems like an eternity, veteran left tackle Joe Staley has been a mainstay on the blind side for the 49ers. One of the top tackles in the league during his career, it’s not out of the question he could be a potential Hall of Fame candidate at Canton.

Players have to lose their step eventually, and we may be seeing that in the preseason.

After struggling at Denver against the Broncos, Staley gave up a sack on Saturday as well.

He just looks that little bit older, that little bit slower and that little bit less powerful.

This isn’t to say his play is going to self-destruct in 2019. But at this rate, the 49ers may have to look at drafting somebody to replace him or right tackle Mike McGlinchey (should he shift over) when the time is right.

No need to panic, but the 49ers should start thinking about making that succession plan in due course.
