The San Francisco 49ers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 27-17 in the teams’ unofficial “rehearsal game” for the regular season. Here’s what we learned from the Niners’ victory in Week 3 of the 2019 NFL preseason.

The San Francisco 49ers arrived in Kansas City to face off with the Chiefs in Week 3 of the 2019 NFL preseason with a 2-0 record. However, the roster questions that remained unanswered far-outweighed the team’s number of preseason victories.

During their 27-17 victory over the Chiefs on Saturday, the 49ers received answers to a number of those burning questions thanks to strong performances by key players. Some players solidified their spots on the final 53-man roster, some made strong claims for increased regular-season roles and one player allowed Niner fans to finally breathe a significant sigh of relief.

Five short days after his rough post-injury return, 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was given a final chance to get back on track before San Francisco heads to Tampa Bay to kick off the 2019 NFL regular season. Once again, all eyes were on the Niners’ franchise QB, and this time, he did not disappoint.

The 49ers’ offense was the better of the team’s two units, which is understandable given Kansas City’s offensive prowess. In the end, Pro Football Focus’ (PFF) Team of the Week featured four of San Francisco’s starters:

On Saturday, as soon as an important question was answered, a different player on the roster bubble forced a new question to be raised. A prime example is 49ers running back Jeff Wilson, who was on the outside looking in before he finished off the Chiefs in the second half of the game. Wilson’s combination of quick burst and hard running style resulted in a pair of fourth-quarter rushing touchdowns for San Francisco:

These are the type of “good problems” the 49ers have lacked during the handful of years since former head coach Jim Harbaugh‘s departure.

We usually learn the most about an NFL team during their “rehearsal game” in Week 3 of the preseason. For the Niners, Saturday’s matchup was no different.
