Loser: Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo

OK, let’s not overreact. But let’s not avoid the obvious either.

Jimmy Garoppolo did not play well at all Monday night in Denver — his first on-field efforts since tearing his ACL back in Week 3 in 2018. Going 1-of-6 for a net of zero yards with an interception and passer rating of 0.0 is hardly the return most fans were hoping for.

In fairness, Garoppolo is both shaking off the rust from nearly a full year off and dealing with a starting offensive line down two starters (center Weston Richburg and right guard Mike Person). And as Garoppolo told reporters following the game, it can take some time for an offense to fully jell.

San Francisco’s first-team unit came nowhere close to doing that in Denver.

There’s still plenty of time for Garoppolo to right the ship, yes. And it’s way too premature to suggest his early preseason struggles are a clear indication of what’s to come when Week 1 rolls around.

All that said, though, Garoppolo’s efforts during his first stint back on the field raised more questions than answers.

And considering just how much San Francisco’s 2019 campaign hinges on Garoppolo, it’s impossible to not list him in this unfortunate category for now.
