49ers biggest winners, losers halfway through 2019 NFL preseason

Loser: Wide Receiver Jordan Matthews
Richie James’ ascent is only one facet of what’s becoming an intriguing NFL preseason battle at wide receiver.
Rookies Deebo Samuel and Jalen Hurd are safe. So is the speedster, Marquise Goodwin. But things get interesting deeper down the depth chart, particularly between wideouts Kendrick Bourne and Jordan Matthews.
Bourne had some inconsistent moments during Monday’s contest in Denver, including a crucial dropped pass from C.J. Beathard on what would have been a massive gain. But Bourne answered back with the 49ers’ final touchdown of the contest, which only helps solidify his spot on the 53-man roster.
Yes, Bourne showcased these abilities primarily against both the Cowboys and Broncos backups. But he’s been far more involved with the offense than his primary competitor, Matthews.
Matthews was targeted just once against the Broncos, and he had a mere one catch against the Cowboys, too.
Despite a strong showing earlier this spring during organized team activities, Matthews hasn’t been heard from much since.
That’s never a good thing for a player on the fringes of the roster.
