No. 1: Defensive End Solomon Thomas’ Resurgence

If there’s one player every 49ers fan should be pulling for this season, it’s defensive end Solomon Thomas.

Thomas may never live up to the lofty accolade of being the No. 3 overall pick back in the 2017 NFL Draft. But going through the tragic loss of losing his sister to suicide last year, then all the grief and pain associated with it, meant Thomas’ 2018 efforts were going to be hindered regardless of what he did on the field.

Reinvigorated for this season, Thomas is already looking like he can be a difference maker.

San Francisco’s defensive line has already made a massive impact early in training camp. Rather than being a forgotten piece, though, Thomas is looking far more like a top-five pick now than at any other point in his still-young career. He’s been fast off the snap, looks healthier and has shown much more aggression than previously.

“Right now, he is playing with a clear mind,” defensive coordinator Robert Saleh told reporters Sunday. “There’s not much gray area in his play and he’s having some success.”

The early success is an excellent sign, and it’s something Thomas should be able to carry over deep into training camp, solidifying himself a key role and finally becoming a linchpin of the Niners defense.

Especially if the rest of his D-line cast provides added support.
