No. 3: Cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon Is Rebounding Nicely
Cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon would probably like to forget 2018 ever happened.
Or at least learn from it, using what ended up being a slew of season-long mistakes to his advantage.
Fortunately, it appears as if that’s exactly what is happening.
Witherspoon did look a little rusty on day one of camp. Since then, however, he’s managed back-to-back interceptionson consecutive days. Last Sunday, Witherspoon outmuscled wide receiver Dante Pettis, stripping the ball away for an interception. On Monday, Witherspoon got in the way of a pass intended for rookie wideout Jalen Hurd:
The Niners had just two interceptions last season, and none were from their cornerbacks. While it’s still early, seeing Witherspoon working as a ballhawk early is a great sign.
He’ll still have to battle it out with veteran corner Jason Verrett, who took the field for the first time on Monday, for the No. 2 cornerback spot. But remember, Witherspoon struggled a lot in training camp this time last year, and those issues carried into the regular season as well.
If the opposite winds up being true, San Francisco should have a pretty solid crop of corners with decent depth options, too.
