No. 4: Wide Receiver Jordan Matthews

I’ve always been a big fan of the former Philadelphia Eagle, Jordan Matthews. He is a big-bodied target at 6-foot-3 and 212 pounds, while always playing smoothly on the field. He is a great fit for the Kyle Shanahan offense because of his decent ability to create separation from the defense, and especially, even a better fit for this specific 49ers team, due to its lack of productivity in the red zone.

And so far in training camp, Matthews has surpassed expectations.

On the first day of practice, Matthews showed great chemistry with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, catching all three of his targets, including a deep crossing route. On Sunday, Shanahan had this to say about him (h/t NBC Sports Bay Area’s Jennifer Lee Chan):

Some had questioned Matthews’ chances to make the 53-man roster due to the sheer amount of wide receivers this team has.

But if Matthews keeps this up, he will have no problem getting a spot on the roster.
