No. 3: How Tevin Coleman Impacts the 49ers Ground Game

Jerick McKinnon’s injury and placement on the PUP list ensures one of the 49ers’ big offseason pickups, Tevin Coleman, sees even more time during training camp at running back.

Coleman already has the bonus of thriving under Kyle Shanahan during their time together with the Falcons. Additionally, McKinnon’s injury absence during organized team activities meant Coleman saw plenty of time with the first-team unit, too.

But those were padless practices. Where Coleman’s true impact might show up will be when the Niners finally don pads later in training camp.

That should help showcase his physicality and elusiveness.

It won’t happen right away, though, yet that doesn’t change the fact fans should pay close attention to what Coleman is doing early on during training camp. Keep an eye on his dual-threat abilities, serving as both a potent runner and viable pass-catching weapon out of the backfield.

If you want to get an idea how Shanahan will deploy his offense this season, keep an eye on Coleman these next few weeks.
