No. 9: Interior Offensive Line Depth

Weston Richburg’s lingering injury recovery opens up a chance for one of the 49ers’ offseason pickups, offensive lineman Ben Garland, to see some valuable first-team reps during the initial days of training camp.

The Niners did relatively little to address O-line depth during the offseason, especially along the interior. But Garland, who spent 2016 under then-Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator, turned San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan, knows the system and figures to be the immediate backup at center if he performs well enough.

Keep an eye on that.

The 49ers also waived/injured the versatile Erik Magnuson, who fell out of favor with Shanahan during the latter half of 2018. This opens up some prime competition between a number of other reserve players along the interior, namely the team’s former first-round NFL Draft choice, Joshua Garnett, and undrafted rookie Ross Reynolds.

Reynolds has emerged as quite the hidden-gem commodity after going undrafted, yet boasting an excellent rapport as a run blocker.

With San Francisco not picking up Garnett’s fifth-year option, it wouldn’t be shocking to see Reynolds swiftly climbing the depth chart between now and Week 1.
