No. 1: Defensive Back Tarvarius Moore

And the No. 1 player to watch during 49ers training camp this summer? Well, it’s defensive back Tarvarius Moore, who was switched from cornerback to free safety, given the number of injuries the Niners were dealing with at the position during OTAs.

It’s a switch that could go permanent, feasibly. After all, Moore was a collegiate safety at Southern Mississippi. And while his 6-foot-2 frame seems tailor made for boundary corner duties in San Francisco’s defense, his ultimate impact could be better felt at the back end of the defense.

While the 49ers’ shortages at the position — namely Jimmie Ward‘s broken collarbone (he’s expected back by training camp) — prompted the change, there are plenty of reasons to suspect the switch could go permanent.

For starters, Ward is back on only a one-year deal. Meanwhile, fellow safety Adrian Colbert regressed significantly in 2018, and he might not be a long-term answer.

Moore could be, and that’s the point.

Training camp will be a big test for Moore, who’ll have to compete with both Ward and Colbert for either a starting spot or a key reserve role on the depth chart.

If he excels doing so, Moore could wind up being that long-term option for San Francisco, both in 2019 and beyond.
