49ers’ 2019 53-man roster predictions before training camp
By Peter Panacy
Wide Receiver (6)
X Receiver: Deebo Samuel, Marquise Goodwin
Z Receiver: Dante Pettis, Jordan Matthews
Slot: Trent Taylor, Jalen Hurd
It’s no surprise the 49ers made considerable changes at wide receiver during the offseason following a 2018 campaign in which no Niners wideout even reached 500 yards.

True, then-rookie Dante Pettis came close and finished with 467 yards overall. And his five-game finish to 2018 suggests he can finally emerge as a starting player and potential breakout candidate on the right side of the formation. His elusive route-running abilities help boost his stock.
Likewise, the Niners’ addition of South Carolina’s Deebo Samuel in the NFL Draft places a tailor-made wide receiver for Kyle Shanahan’s X-receiver spot vacated by former 49ers wide receiver Pierre Garçon.
If Samuel stays healthy, his physical prowess should do wonders.
Fortunately, the 49ers were also able to get some solid OTA production out of receivers Jordan Matthews and Trent Taylor.
Matthews likely ends up pushing out third-year pro Kendrick Bourne, and the Niners could use the former either on the outside or as a big slot. Taylor, meanwhile, looks to be fully recovered from a lingering back injury he was dealing with last season, meaning he’s the favorite to get his job back over second-year pro Richie James.
Shanahan indicated he’d like to use the speedster, Marquise Goodwin, situationally in 2019. Goodwin will get his reps, just not as much as he did in 2017.
