San Francisco 49ers: The all-time team in franchise history
By Peter Panacy
Safety
Ronnie Lott
Merton Hanks
Hall of Fame safety Ronnie Lott is another no-brainer pick for the all-time team.
During his rookie year in 1981, Lott posted 89 tackles and seven interceptions, returning three of them for touchdowns as a cornerback. It is no surprise that Lott would be named as a first team All-Pro that year, eventually making the transition to safety a few years later.
Lott developed the reputation as one of the hardest-hitting safeties in football. Yet his physicality was not the only aspect to his game. Lott was also a ball hawk who wound up tallying 51 interceptions during his 49er career, a record that still stands today among all San Francisco players.
Safety Merton Hanks picked up where Lott left off in 1991.
During his nine-year career with San Francisco, Hanks would total 31 interceptions along with 445 tackles. His 31 interceptions are tied for fourth on the all-time franchise record list.
Hanks would also be named to the Pro Bowl four times, including one selection as first team All-Pro in 1995.
