No. 1: 49ers Feel Comfortable with Their Current Crop at Safety

Perhaps the 49ers simply don’t look at Tre Boston as a serious upgrade. Fans and analysts might. But the Niners front office doesn’t see it that way.

There’s some merit to the argument. San Francisco spent a third-round NFL Draft pick on Tarvarius Moore. And while his 2018 transition to cornerback might not have gone as smoothly as hoped, it’s worthwhile to at least explore the option of him being an impact player at safety.

Simply put, it’s far too early to give up on Moore, given the relatively high investment.

A possible bounce-back year by Adrian Colbert could factor into the mix, too.

Another reason could be the Niners are merely waiting on their safety needs until 2020. It’s not without precedent, either. In 2018, one of the 49ers’ top apparent needs was to find a quality edge rusher. In free agency and the NFL Draft, John Lynch and Co. essentially “punted” on the opportunity to grab one, tabling that need until this year, grabbing EDGEs Dee Ford and Nick Bosa.

With safety a key need in 2019, perhaps San Francisco is merely putting off addressing it for the season.

And with Boston looking for more of a long-term, lucrative deal right now, it’s feasible the Niners had no interest in going there.

Again, it’s anyone’s guess why the 49ers have avoided Boston altogether. Yet there sure are some possibilities why.
