Regrading the 49ers’ 2018 NFL Draft class after one year
By Peter Panacy
The 49ers took something of a flier with their second pick in Round 3 of the 2018 NFL Draft, grabbing former Southern Mississippi safety Tarvarius Moore and hoping the 6-foot-2, 200-pound defensive back could be converted to boundary cornerback.

Moore climbed up draft-board rankings after he ran an impressive 4.32 40-yard time at his pro day. Before that, Moore likely would have been a fourth- or fifth-round draft pick.
This likely convinced the Niners to reach, which knocks the grade down quite a bit. So does the fact San Francisco was essentially taking on a project — hoping Moore could adequately learn a new position, which he never played before.
In year one, Moore’s transition wasn’t necessarily quick. While he did manage to appear in all 16 games, starting two of them, Moore found himself buried on the depth chart behind starting corners Ahkello Witherspoon and Richard Sherman. Only injuries allowed Moore to see a bit more of the field.
A low grade should be expected from Moore, since the conversion project is nowhere complete. Year two of his pro efforts should reveal a lot, however, and more accurately answer whether or not the 49ers reached here.
