If there’s one hope for the Atlanta Falcons this year, it’s to stay healthy. Oh, and getting a bit more thump out of its defense would be nice, too.
Interestingly enough, Atlanta didn’t do much to address that side of the ball in the NFL Draft until day three, which is a little shocking and a prime reason the team drops a bit in our NFL power rankings. Ohio State’s Kendall Sheffield is a promising corner, but that pass rush could still be an issue when the regular season rolls around.
On a good note, the Falcons took serious their need to address the offensive line, landing Boston College’s Chris Lindstrom and Washington’s Kaleb McGary with two picks in Round 1. Lindstrom is a solid player, for sure. But a first-half-of-the-first-round solid player? Probably not. Maybe Atlanta reached a bit for him there.
The Falcons are going with a new offensive coordinator under head coach Dan Quinn this year, Dirk Koetter, so hopefully that gets the offense back to a level of respectability it hasn’t had since Kyle Shanahan departed after 2016.
That said, defense could still be a problem for Atlanta, which could spell trouble for Quinn’s future and any further rise in NFL power rankings this season.
Especially if the team can’t stay healthy.
