San Francisco 49ers: 5 veterans on the bubble after 2019 NFL Draft

No. 1: Wide Receiver Marquise Goodwin
Remember the pending camp battle between all those wide receivers? Well, it doesn’t just affect Jordan Matthews and Kendrick Bourne.
Another name to watch here is wide receiver Marquise Goodwin, who enjoyed a career year under Kyle Shanahan in 2017, only to see a significant drop off in production last season, largely influenced by both injury and personal tragedy.

Shanahan indicated he’d like to use Goodwin as a role player this upcoming season. But with so many pass catchers looking for spots on the roster, one has to wonder just what kind of role Goodwin would hold.
Goodwin does have an attribute few others possess: blazing speed, which should help him solidify a spot on the 53-man roster as the team’s primary deep threat.
Yet if there’s a trait Shanahan prefers over speed, it’s route-running abilities. Goodwin developed that skill set in 2017, but those are attributes both Dante Pettis and Deebo Samuel possess also. When considering the sheer number of other qualified receivers on San Francisco’s 90-man offseason roster, it’s not out of the realm of possibility Shanahan will have to choose someone over Goodwin to hold onto one of those precious spots on the depth chart.
This isn’t to say Goodwin is in serious danger of losing a roster spot. Rather, based off the team’s NFL Draft actions, his role is by no means guaranteed either.
