49ers’ Best Picks from 2019
Eternal optimism is great, and it’s hard to find a team that thought it had a terrible NFL Draft right out of the gate, right?
Fortunately for the Niners, they ended up with arguably the No. 1 overall prospect in this year’s class, swiping him up with the second pick after the top-drafting Arizona Cardinals went with Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray.
Turns out, that’s San Francisco’s best pick.

EDGE Nick Bosa, No. 2 Overall
Despite Nick Bosa suffering an abdominal injury early in his 2018 campaign with Ohio State, then making a business decision to sit out the remainder of the year, there was never any serious question if his draft stock would take a hit.
We could go on for days about how the 49ers getting Bosa was an absolute steal, but that would be redundant.
Instead, consider the fact Bosa will be joining a defensive line comprised of four other former first-round draftees: DeForest Buckner, Solomon Thomas, Dee Ford and Arik Armstead.
Talk about a formidable defensive line. It’s going to be difficult for opposing blockers to leave pass-rushers adequately blocked, which means Bosa is already put in a position to thrive right away.
Wide Receiver Deebo Samuel, No. 36 Overall
Deebo Samuel’s rise up the draft ranks came to a point during the 2019 Senior Bowl, where he had the chance to show off some nifty footwork in front of the South squad’s head coach, Kyle Shanahan.
Shanahan prefers route-running skills slightly over speed, which negates Samuel’s relatively average speed (he ran a 4.48 40-yard time at the NFL Scouting Combine). And with Samuel’s physical style of play, he’ll be a perfect complement to second-year wide receiver Dante Pettis, who uses finesse and footwork over strength.
It’s hard to envision the 49ers having yet another year in which no wide receiver reaches 500 receiving yards, like this group did in 2018.
