No. 2: New England Patriots

Wait, the New England Patriots aren’t going to trade up to No. 2 overall, right?

No, of course not. But that doesn’t rule out a Round 1 trade between the two teams.

The 49ers have a nice little trade history of late with head coach Bill Belichick and Co., namely the two deals involving quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (you might have heard of that one), as well as right tackle Trent Brown during last year’s NFL Draft.

Instead of New England moving up, any deal between the two teams would probably involve the Pats moving down, giving the Niners the final pick in Round 1.

San Francisco is slated to pick at No. 36 overall — the team’s top pick in Round 2. One of the popular targets for the 49ers here is a wide receiver, particularly after no Niners wideout reached 500 receiving yards in 2018.

Ahead of the 49ers in Round 2, however, the Cardinals (No. 33 overall) and Raiders (No. 35 overall) could be looking to add a receiver as well, possibly grabbing one of head coach Kyle Shanahan’s preferred targets here.

Moving up four spots in a deal with the Pats probably wouldn’t cost too much, perhaps a 2020 mid-round pick.

Especially if Belichick and John Lynch continue their comfort making deals.
