49ers’ character equivalents on HBO’s Game of Thrones
By Peter Panacy
John Lynch as Jorah Mormont
Years ago, he was feared on the field for his overpowering abilities, keen wits and strength. But with age comes a change in roles.
Are we talking about 49ers general manager John Lynch? Or are we talking about Game of Thrones‘ Jorah Mormont?
There isn’t exactly “retirement” in GoT, but those roles change. Mormont, who came from nobility in Westeros, found himself exiled in Essos and becoming something of a shady adviser to Daenerys Targaryen, although he certainly had conflicting motives early on.
Granted, the Niners didn’t hire Lynch unaware of ulterior motives. He was brought aboard to help restore San Francisco’s dynasty.
Like Mormont, Lynch made his fair share of mistakes early on, showing the true human side of football operations, which aren’t exactly like delivering hard hits. Mormont, meanwhile, also made his share of mistakes, too, even receiving some shortly wrath from Daenerys after she found out his plans as a spy and would-be assassin.
Now, however, Mormont is one of the Dragon Queen’s most trusted advisers, responsible for assembling some of the many alliances she’s needed in her attempt to conquer the Iron Throne.
Lynch, meanwhile, is looking to forge those same moves to bring the best talent to Levi’s Stadium in an attempt to conquer the Lombardi Trophy.
Season 8 of Game of Thrones begins on Sunday, April 14 at 9 p.m. ET.
The 49ers’ “game of end zones” begins this September.
