The 49ers already have one stud tight end in Pro Bowler George Kittle. After him, though, the Niners’ depth chart is lacking.

Currently, the No. 2 spot is held by the veteran, Garrett Celek, who ended up receiving more accepted penalties against (six) than receptions (five) in 2018. On the wrong side of 30 years old, it might be smart for San Francisco to strongly consider a replacement this offseason.

Unfortunately, other needs prevented the 49ers from doing so earlier. But that doesn’t mean a lack of late-round sleepers, such as Boston College’s Tommy Sweeney.

Like Kittle, Sweeney’s collegiate production wasn’t overly impressive. And Sweeney’s run-after-the-catch abilities don’t come close to what Kittle managed in his record-setting campaign of a year ago.

Additionally, Sweeney’s abilities as a run blocker will need a lot of work at the pro level.

That said, he is a reliable pass catcher on shorter, safer routes. And Sweeney presents a good target, matching reliable hands with a likable 6-foot-4, 251-pound frame.
