No. 1: Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo

Yes, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is poised to break out in 2019.

Yes, nearly everyone thought it would happen last year, especially after Garoppolo helped the 49ers win five games in a row to close out 2017. But that ACL injury suffered in Week 3 last year. That put a damper on those prospects for a breakout.

Mind you, Garoppolo has started only 10 games at the pro level, including just eight with San Francisco. Fans have been clamoring for a full season with one starter holding the reins over the course of 16 games.

Assuming Garoppolo comes back healthy, why shouldn’t he wind up being a breakout player?

There’s a lot hinging on his efforts, of course. But consider this: Garoppolo didn’t have the benefit of a solid running game in 2017, yet still managed to carry the offense to five wins that year. The Niners have reinforced the rushing attack this offseason, especially with the addition of former Atlanta Falcons tailback Tevin Coleman in free agency. George Kittle and Dante Pettis coming into form should help matters, too, as will an improved pass-protection stock from Mike McGlinchey and Co.

Simply put, Garoppolo should be a major beneficiary of an upgraded and improved offense this year, which should put the young signal-caller into a great position to succeed.
