The 49ers are highly likely to target a wide receiver in Round 2 of the NFL Draft, particularly after no Niners wideout reached 500 receiving yards in 2018.

The good news is there should be more than a handful of prospects from which to choose in the second round.

More from Niner Noise

One of them is Ohio State’s Parris Campbell.

At 6-foot-0 and 205 pounds, there’s a lot to suggest San Francisco would like Campbell. First of all, he ran a blazing 4.31 40-yard time at the NFL Scouting Combine. That’s a trait head coach Kyle Shanahan would love, and Campbell is more than explosive with the ball in his hands after the catch.

The problem, however, is Campbell is pretty unpolished as a route runner, and former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer’s offense didn’t exactly call upon Campbell to run a lot of complex routes.

None of this suggests Campbell is going to be a proverbial “one-trick pony” at the NFL level. But he’s going to need a lot of refinement to hone his route-running technique.

With Shanahan and the 49ers looking to get above the .500 mark this season, no longer considering the situation a rebuild, the team needs impact players now and shouldn’t bank on developmental prospects with a high upside.
