The 49ers are likely to grab an edge rusher with their first overall pick, perhaps Ohio State’s Nick Bosa.

But assuming the Niners use that pick to grab Alabama defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, or the team trades down and upgrades another position, there’s always the chance to take an edge early in Round 2.

Louisiana Tech EDGE Jaylon Ferguson is a player fringing between Rounds 1 and 2. And while his 17.5 sacks as a senior in 2018 is pretty notable, there are more than a number of reasons to assume he’ll falter a bit at the pro level.

Coming in at 6-foot-5 and 271 pounds, Ferguson looks the part of an NFL-caliber pass-rusher. The thing, though, is it wouldn’t be shocking to see him become more of a run stopper at the next level.

That alone wouldn’t be a problem. But the Niners already have two quality run-stopping defensive linemen in Arik Armstead and Solomon Thomas.

What will likely keep Ferguson from being a prolific pass-rusher is his relatively average athletic abilities in this department.

Unless San Francisco wants to triple up on run-stopping defensive players, passing on Ferguson would be wise.
