While the San Francisco 49ers are yet to engage in the 2019 NFL Draft, let’s take a look at five players who already find themselves on the roster bubble this season.

We still have very little clue how the San Francisco 49ers will formulate their roster for 2019. While the team has made some notable additions during free agency, the upcoming NFL Draft in April will have a lot of say on just what the depth chart might look like when the final 53-man roster is announced in September.

Players on the fringes of the roster are always in jeopardy, and they’ll need strong a strong training camp and preseason to stick around.

And all those camp bodies to fill out a 90-man offseason roster will have an uphill struggle to land a roster spot, too.

Yet this slideshow isn’t necessarily about those players. No, these players potentially on the roster bubble heading into the 2019 season are a bit more of the high-profile variety. Simply put, these players not making the regular-season roster would be a bit more of a surprise than others you might not to expect to be there anyway.

Here is an early look at five players who’ll enter offseason programs on the roster bubble in 2019.

No. 5: Defensive Tackle Sheldon Day

The Niners defensive line is already deep heading into 2019, and it’s likely to get even deeper during the NFL Draft, considering the slew of D-line prospects San Francisco will consider.

Especially if the team adds Ohio State EDGE Nick Bosa or Alabama defensive tackle Quinnen Williams with its first pick in Round 1.

Such a move will likely push the remaining depth chart down a bit, and one of the players in danger of losing a roster spot is 24-year-old defensive tackle Sheldon Day.

Day, who joined the Niners off the Jacksonville Jaguars’ waiver wire in 2017, saw his role diminish quite a bit last season, particularly as San Francisco looked to involve the younger Jullian Taylor over the latter half of 2018.

Cutting Day would cost the 49ers zero in dead money and generate $720,000 in cap savings if he doesn’t make the roster. This, of course, is less about the financial ramifications and more about whether or not the versatility and depth for San Francisco’s defensive line would be better off with someone else.

Consider Day on the weak side of the bubble right now.
