5 remaining free agents the 49ers can still target in 2019
By Peter Panacy
The San Francisco 49ers have likely wrapped up their big actions in NFL free agency, yet these five remaining free agents might be enticing enough in coming days.
For the most part, it seems as if the San Francisco 49ers have made all the big moves they want to do amid the opening days of 2019 NFL free agency.
The Niners made some big-splash moves, including signing linebacker Kwon Alexander and trading for EDGE Dee Ford. Lesser moves, such as re-signing defensive back Jimmie Ward and taking a flier on oft-injured cornerback Jason Verrett, could have good implications for the upcoming season, too.
You can check out the list of these San Francisco transactions here.
Currently, according to Spotrac.com, the Niners have just over $30 million in cap space. They’ll want to save roughly $10 million for their rookie NFL Draft class, plus a little extra to absorb the numerous transactions they’ll encounter between now and 2020. But there’s still considerable room to land a few more quality free agents.
Some depth signings would be smart, too.
While the free-agent market has dried up a lot, there are still a number of players worth exploring. Here are five the 49ers should at least consider.
No. 5: Offensive Guard Josh Kline
The Tennessee Titans have been busy as of late, and one of those moves included releasing veteran offensive guard Josh Kline.
Kline, 29 years old, could probably be had on the cheap. And for a 6-foot-3, 300-pound lineman, Kline moves awfully well and is more than capable handling zone-blocking duties.
It isn’t as if the Niners lack the need here. Even though the team re-signed versatile lineman Mike Person earlier this offseason, center Weston Richburg (knee) and offensive guard Laken Tomlinson (knee) may not be 100 percent by training camp.
Kline has the flexibility to play both guard spots, which would provide both depth and starting potential.
Especially with two of the 49ers’ five starters up front coming back from considerable injuries.
