Cornerback Jason Verrett

It’s a gamble. But the 49ers made a very low-risk move by inking veteran cornerback Jason Verrett to a one-year, $3.6 million deal, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter:

Verrett, 27 years old, has been plagued by injuries ever since the Los Angeles Chargers drafted him in Round 1 of the 2014 NFL Draft. During his Pro Bowl 2015 campaign, Verrett appeared in 14 games but has never seen more than six any other season.

Last year, Verrett missed the entire year with a torn Achilles.

That said, the 5-foot-10 defensive back has plenty of upside when healthy. And the relatively low-cost deal makes the signing one of relative ease. It helps take pressure off corners Ahkello Witherspoon and Tarvarius Moore, who struggled in 2018. Verrett’s familiarity with the same Cover 3 zone defense the 49ers currently employ should help matters, too.

Simply put, when healthy, Verrett is an outstanding cover corner.

Don’t let the size fool you, either. Verrett plays bigger than his stature would suggest, which makes him someone qualified to handle boundary duties.

If he can stay healthy, of course.
