Kicker Jonathan Brown

Two years, $1.08 million

The San Francisco 49ers’ first free-agent signing of 2019 certainly wasn’t splashy, as the team inked relatively unknown kicker Jonathan Brown to a two-year, $1.08 million deal.

Here’s what the 49ers’ website had to say about the 26-year-old former soccer star:

"Brown (5-10, 195) originally entered the NFL in 2016 after signing with the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted rookie free agent on May 8, 2016. He was waived by Cincinnati on August 30, 2016 and later re-signed with the team on January 20, 2017. Following his release on August 1, 2017, he was signed to the Bengals practice squad on December 28, 2017, and later signed a Reserve/Future contract on January 1, 2018. He connected on all six of his field goal attempts during the 2018 preseason with the Bengals, including a 55-yard attempt, prior to being waived on September 1, 2018."

The Niners’ acquisition of Brown does little to endanger Robbie Gould’s starting job with the team in 2019. However, the signing does provide the team with an extra training camp body, and although Shanahan will likely utilize Gould for field goals and extra points during the preseason, the Niners can now save their veteran kicker from extensive kickoff work until the regular season begins.

Additionally, the early pickup of Brown affords the team an extended look at a potential eventual replacement for Gould if he chooses to leave San Francisco after the 2019 season.
