The San Francisco 49ers hold the No. 2 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft and could easily stay put. But in this mock, the Niners trade out of that spot and pick up picks in the process.

It’s day one of the 2019 NFL Draft, and the San Francisco 49ers are officially on the clock.

The Arizona Cardinals, who owned the top selection in this year’s draft, elected not to follow all the speculative rumors and buzz, grabbing Ohio State EDGE Nick Bosa at No. 1 overall instead of Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray.

Bosa would have been an ideal target for the Niners, who need plenty of help with their outside pass rush this season. The next pick, which wouldn’t be a bad move, could be Alabama defensive tackle Quinnen Williams — widely seen as the No. 2 overall prospect behind Bosa.

But with San Francisco already having used three first-round selections on interior defensive linemen the past four years, Williams’ selection appears to be a bit redundant for general manager John Lynch.

Instead, Lynch calls up his friend, Denver Broncos general manager John Elway, and asks about a possible trade from No. 2 overall.

The Broncos, even after trading for veteran quarterback Joe Flacco, could likely be searching for his replacement in what is turning out to be a very thin quarterbacking draft class. Lynch and Elway have a strong working rapport and strike a deal:

By doing so, San Francisco nets an additional two picks in this year’s draft, plus a 2020 second rounder.

The Broncos get their quarterback, whoever he winds up being.

So let’s mock it out, shall we? The 49ers dropped down eight spots and are now on the clock, while we use our trusty FanSpeak draft tool to suggest who winds up being available with the 49ers’ extra picks.

Starting off with that first selection.
