2019 NFL Draft: Two-round, 32-team mock amid scouting combine
By Peter Panacy
This is going to make some 49ers fans mad — particularly the EDGE, EDGE, EDGE crowd — but the Niners don’t play around and elect to grab the No. 2 overall prospect in this year’s NFL Draft class, Quinnen Williams.
San Francisco 49ers
In a more-realistic world, San Francisco would trade out of this spot if Nick Bosa wasn’t available. Since there aren’t trades in this mock, however, general manager John Lynch spends yet another pick on his defensive interior.
“But the 49ers have done that three of the past four years in Round 1,” you say. True, although only one of those picks, defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, has lived up to expectations.
Williams is the kind of pocket-wrecking force the Niners haven’t had since the days of now-retired defensive end Justin Smith. Adding Williams would afford San Francisco the luxury of moving on from defensive tackle Arik Armstead, while still keeping 2017 first-round pick, Solomon Thomas, on the interior.
Besides, those fans clamoring for the 49ers to get a true EDGE probably would forget that sentiment really quick when they start watching an interior pass-rushing tandem of Buckner and Williams.
Also, constantly putting Bosa to the 49ers in mock drafts was getting a bit old. Let’s change it up a bit.
