Just because the 49ers probably won’t grab a prospect doesn’t mean they aren’t impressed by him. And as was the case with Mike McGlinchey last year, there can always be some shake-ups.

Such is the case with Alabama offensive tackle Jonah Williams, who all but solidified his projection as the top offensive line prospect in this year’s draft with an excellent NFL Scouting Combine performance.

Williams ran a 5.10 40-yard time, as shown below:

And while Williams’ 23 bench reps aren’t the most impressive, what should be of note are his excellent lateral-movement skills and agility traits. Those would be more important to the 49ers anyway, if they decided to go that route in Round 1 of the NFL Draft.

So should the reported news Williams spent time training with Joe Staley.

The only way a Williams-to-San Francisco selection makes sense is if the 49ers trade down from No. 2 overall, acquire some added draft capital to address other needs and make Williams a priority selection to replace Staley at some point. In the meantime, there’s always the idea the Niners could kick Williams inside to guard for a year or two.

But that’s all conjecture, and combine workouts will continue through March 4 from Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana.
