Pick No. 34: Tre Lamar, Linebacker, Clemson

Previous: Chris Lindstrom, Guard, Boston College

In the 2018 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers landed a definite keeper in linebacker Fred Warner, a player so respected that he was quickly given the role of calling plays from San Francisco’s defensive huddle.

However, the rest of the 49ers’ linebacking corps is mediocre at best, and it’s time to give Warner a partner in the middle of the field.

Clemson Tigers linebacker Tre Lamar can serve as a complimentary linebacker to Warner. While Warner is already a respected leader who excels in coverage, Lamar has the ability to play a more physical role as a hard hitter, and also possessed intriguing pass-rushing skills when Clemson utilized him as an edge rusher.

Warner fell to the third round of the draft because of concerns about his athleticism, but Lamar has no such concerns. He has the height, weight, speed and agility to be a great linebacker at the professional level.

While Warner has a number of strengths, but and also has his set of weaknesses, adding Lamar to the Niners’ linebacking corps would effectively combine yin with yang in the interior of San Francisco’s defense.
