San Francisco 49ers: Creating the ideal starting offense in 2019
By Peter Panacy
Quarterback
Jimmy Garoppolo
There’s not much of a discussion here, of course. Jimmy Garoppolo, who tore his ACL in Week 3 of 2018, will return to his starting duties this year.

However, there is going to be a nice camp battle for the No. 2 quarterbacking job between C.J. Beathard and Nick Mullens. Beathard, who owns just one win over his 10 starts since being selected in Round 3 of the 2017 NFL Draft, doesn’t have a stock level suggestive of being able to usurp Mullens.
Especially considering Mullens looked far more capable of leading Kyle Shanahan’s offense over the final eight games of 2018.
That said, the 49ers have repeatedly stated the competition for backup duties between Beathard and Mullens is equal heading into the offseason.
Perhaps, although a general consensus would likely conclude it’s Mullens’ job to lose.
Either way, the hope is whichever backup quarterback wins the job never has to see meaningful snaps in 2019. Those belong to Garoppolo, and Niners fans are still clamoring for a full season with Jimmy G under center.
