No. 5: Trayvon Mullen, Cornerback, Clemson

Why the 49ers should be interested

Trayvon Mullen fits the mold of a Cover 3 corner who would fit the 49ers defense perfectly. With Ahkello Witherspoon one of the Niners’ cornerbacks of the future, the team needs to find the player to succeed Richard Sherman on the other side of the field.

Mullen is someone who has better talent than production. As a result, the 49ers could see a first- or a second-round talent be available to them a few rounds later who fits the scheme and fills a need.

The main problem with Mullen is he needs to be coached up well to play to his potential. Luckily, San Francisco has a very vocal and willing leader in Sherman, and he can give Mullen the “shot in the arm” he needs.

Mullen currently projects to be a third- or a fourth-round pick, but could move as high as the second round if he has a good game against Alabama and then nails his NFL Scouting Combine. However, he would need a team to fall in love with him to do that, and more likely the 49ers could find him as late as day three.

An intriguing prospect, to be sure.

Pros: Scheme fit, intriguing talent, fills need
Cons: Lack of production, raw

49ers could select him in: Round 3 or 4
