San Francisco 49ers: Power ranking the top 30 players of 2018
By Aaron Tan
I’m sure most people were shocked when John Lynch selected offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey with the No. 9 overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft. I was surprised — to an extent.

In fellow Niner Noise contributor Jeremy Wohlfart’s compiled staff article, I said that “a surprise pick at Nos. 9 or 10 would be offensive tackles Mike McGlinchey or Connor Williams. Nobody is mocking any of these guys to the 49ers, but I wouldn’t be mad at all if we picked up a solid tackle in the first round. The thing that’s been concerning me for a while now is Joe Staley’s age, and he will likely need a replacement very soon. McGlinchey or Williams would fit the bill to replace Staley.”
It is no secret that left tackle Joe Staley will be retiring soon, and with then-right tackle Trent Brown reportedly showing up to practice out of shape, the pick made sense.
And it was well worth it.
McGlinchey did not have an easy rookie year in terms of opponents, as he had to face the likes of the Broncos’ Von Miller, the Cardinals’ Chandler Jones and other elite pass-rushers. However, he more than held his own, finishing the 2018 season as the highest-graded rookie offensive tackle and the second-highest rookie offensive lineman, per Pro Football Focus.
He’s not bad at karaoke, either.
