No. 5: Retain the coaches that have excelled

The best performing unit so far in 2018 has been the offense. Within the offense, quarterback and offensive line play have been at the forefront. The running game is ranked 10th in the league in rushing yards per game, and Nick Mullens is becoming a winner.

The coaching staff of any team is often the first to take the blame when a team performs poorly. In this case, the offensive line and quarterback coach have exceeded expectations.

Typically, the longer an offensive unit remains intact, the better they perform. This year, the 49ers offensive line had three new starters. Maintaining the continuity of the coaches of this unit is just as important as maintaining player constancy. Kyle Shanahan needs to make sure 49ers offensive line coach John Benton returns to continue improving his group.

Equally important is the retention of quarterback coach Rich Scangarello. Two years in as 49ers QB coach, Scangarello has a grasp on his position group and Shanahan’s system. Scangarello has thus far molded the raw Mullens into a viable NFL QB. He has earned a shot to see what he can do with a healthy Jimmy Garoppolo.
