With the 2019 season on the horizon San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan must make some changes.

When head coach Bill Parcells left the New England Patriots in 1996, he was famously quoted as saying “If they want you to cook the dinner, at least they ought to let you shop for some of the groceries.”

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch is primarily in charge shopping for the team’s groceries. While head coach Kyle Shanahan aids in this search, his primary responsibility is to devise the best recipe he can with the available ingredients.

Giving players the tools they need to succeed, putting them in positions where they can excel and assembling a competent coaching staff are three of the main responsibilities coaches have.

Having won in Weeks 14 and 15, the 49ers appear to be trending in the right direction. With a roster depleted by injury, Shanahan has unquestionably done an outstanding job as head coach. Anyone who says his job is or should be in jeopardy should go back under a bridge with the other trolls.

In the 2017 season, the team made a quarterback change after 10 games after getting off to a 1-9 start, proceeded to win the final games of the season and finished with a 6-10 record. One cannot help to draw the parallels between this season and last.

With another year of head coaching under Shanahan’s belt, he should be more confident about what changes should be made going into this offseason. An offseason in which everything should be under review. Scheme, coaches, practices schedules and regimen, hell, even the hotels the team stays at should all be open to scrutiny. When your record is 4-10, nothing is sacred.

To follow, in no particular order, are areas under the purview of Shanahan in which a change should be made.
