49ers preview: Can Mullens outscore Bucs without top WRs Goodwin and Garcon?

49ers X-factors and players to watch
QB Nick Mullens
Mullens’ third game at the professional level will be an important one for the youngster. Mullens will be expected to take advantage of the Buccaneers’ suspect pass defense, as the quarterback faces the softest matchup of his young career. If Mullens doesn’t thrive against Tampa Bay — which will be a necessity for San Francisco if they expect to keep up with the Bucs’ offense — Shanahan could turn back to quarterback C.J. Beathard in the coming weeks.
TE George Kittle and RB Matt Breida
The likely absence of Goodwin leaves the 49ers with Kittle and Breida as the team’s top offensive playmakers. Both players will be asked to step up on Sunday in order for San Francisco to keep pace with Tampa Bay’s high-flying offensive attack.
49ers Wide Receivers
All four of the 49ers’ wideouts — Pettis, Bourne, James and Taylor — will need to take advantage of their increased roles in today’s game. With Taylor relegated to the slot, James may see his first extended work on the outside as he rotates with starters Pettis and Bourne.
49ers Pass Defense
One of the 49ers’ keys to victory on Sunday is winning the turnover battle against the most turnover-friendly team in the NFL. The battle begins with San Francisco’s pass rush — which must keep Winston uncomfortable in the pocket — and ends with the members of the Niners’ secondary, who need to make plays when given the opportunity. Tampa Bay should be able to move the ball through the air today, but the 49ers’ defensive backs should also see their fair share of interceptable passes.
