No. 4: Offensive Guard Joshua Garnett

It’s apparent third-year offensive guard Joshua Garnett is not among Kyle Shanahan’s favorites. Garnett, a 2016 first-round NFL Draft pick, didn’t do himself any favors by suffering a season-ending knee injury before the 2017 season. Then losing the starting bid at right guard to a Shanahan pickup, Mike Person, didn’t help either.

Garnett isn’t a starter despite the first-round status. And he’s appeared in just four games this season, being relegated to a less-than-versatile interior backup.

It’s a bit puzzling the 49ers didn’t try to move Garnett by the 2018 NFL trade deadline. Perhaps the market simply wasn’t high enough, and depth along the offensive line is always important.

Still, Garnett is yet another example of a pickup from the former regime under then-general manager Trent Baalke. And those players haven’t fared well with Shanahan and current GM John Lynch.

With Garnett boasting one more year on his rookie contract, it would be shocking if he’s still around in 2019.
