Oh no! The 49ers didn’t draft in Round 5!

Well, that’s the selection used on Laken Tomlinson. And aside from a rough start after joining the 49ers back in 2017, he’s ended up a solid guard for San Francisco’s offensive line. He’s not going anywhere anytime soon either.

More from Niner Noise

Early in Round 6, the 49ers shore up their secondary by grabbing USC free safety Marvell Tell III.

Tell, 6-foot-2 and 195 pounds, had a bit of a rough start to his senior year, which probably dropped him out of day two of the NFL Draft. But he’s come on as of late, registering his first interception and tying a personal collegiate record with four passes broken up.

He has some pretty good speed too. And while his man-to-man coverage skills aren’t the best, the 49ers employ a lot of zone on the back end anyway. Tell is the kind of player who performs best when the action is in front of him.

The 49ers have had problems with safety depth all season long, namely with starting defensive backs Adrian Colbert (ankle, injured reserve) and Jaquiski Tartt (shoulder). This has forced San Francisco to mix and match various pairings at the last line of defense.

So far, the results haven’t exactly been great.

Tell may never wind up being a starter at the pro level. But he could easily be a quality backup and special teams contributor.

As the 49ers have seen this season, those are necessary.

The Niners still need plenty of depth on both sides of the ball. Look back at the picks, though. The vast majority focus on defense, which has been a major weakness in 2018.

Hopefully some of these projected picks would help solve that.
