Wow, the 49ers must really be impressed with Ohio State players this early in the NFL Draft.

But what’s the problem if two Buckeyes wind up solving two of San Francisco’s biggest needs?

The Niners’ top pick in Round 2 is cornerback Sheffield — a 6-foot-0, 193-pound defensive back with plenty of speed to burn, as NFL.com’s Chase Goodbread explained:

"Sheffield broke OSU’s 60-meter dash indoor record earlier this year with a time of 6.663 seconds. That’s the fastest 60 time of any player listed here. The former Alabama player, who had a one-year stop in junior college in between, broke up nine passes last season. That was the second-most on the team to Denzel Ward, who was selected fourth overall by the Cleveland Browns in this year’s draft. Word from the OSU staff is that Sheffield is every bit as fast as Ward, who tied for the fastest 40-yard-dash time (4.32) of anyone at the NFL Scouting Combine this year."

Sheffield’s collegiate career got off to a slow start, as he was known more for his speed rather than his coverage skills.

But those have come on well in 2018, and Sheffield finally became something of a ballhawk for Ohio State’s defense, picking up his first two interceptions of his college career.

If he slips out of Round 1, expect the Niners to take a hard look.
